Origins and the Impact of the 2021 Coup

In February 2021, Myanmar’s military coup severely disrupted the country’s education system, stripping university students of their right to education and academic freedom. As the military attempted to control educational institutions, many students, teachers, and academic staff joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM), refusing to participate in military-controlled education. This led to widespread boycotts of military-run universities and a growing need for alternative learning opportunities.

The Emergence of Interim Education

Amid the revolution, a collective effort emerged to uphold the right to education and resist military control. Various education councils and interim institutions were established to provide learning platforms aligned with democratic values and academic freedom. In response to this urgent need, Spring Normal University (SNU) was established on September 7, 2021, as an independent and inclusive higher education institution committed to preparing future educators.

SNU was formed through a collaboration between key institutions:

  • Yangon University of Education
  • Sagaing University of Education
  • University for the Development of the National Races of the Union

This coalition aimed to provide displaced and CDM-affiliated students an opportunity to continue their academic journey without compromising their political beliefs or safety.

Building an Inclusive and Resilient Education Platform

SNU is more than just a university—it is a symbol of resistance and hope for Myanmar’s youth. With the support of CDM teachers, external educators, and international visiting professors, the university has developed an alternative academic structure that ensures students receive quality education in exile or through online platforms.

SNU’s academic programs focus on teacher education, emphasizing democratic education, critical thinking, and inclusive learning environments. The university is dedicated to producing highly skilled educators who will contribute to an inclusive, and high-quality education system in a future democratic Myanmar.

The Role of SNU in the Revolution

Since its establishment, SNU has not only been an educational institution but also a key player in the broader movement for social and political change in Myanmar. Through its curriculum, research initiatives, and community engagement, the university continues to empower students to become leaders, educators, and advocates who can contribute to rebuilding Myanmar’s education system after the revolution.

Looking Forward

Spring Normal University envisions a future where all students have unrestricted access to education, free from oppression. The university remains committed to academic freedom, quality teacher training, and democratic values, ensuring that it will continue to be a beacon of knowledge and resilience for future generations.
